Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara – Arrival and First Game Drive
Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or airport, where you’ll begin the scenic drive to Masai Mara (approximately 5-6 hours). Along the way, you’ll pass through the stunning Great Rift Valley, where you can stop to admire the dramatic landscapes and take a few photos. Upon arrival in Masai Mara, check in at your chosen lodge or tented camp, enjoy a delicious lunch, and get ready for your first taste of the Wildebeest Migration.
In the afternoon, you’ll set off on your first game drive to explore the reserve. As you venture into the Mara’s vast plains, you’ll have the chance to witness the migration in full swing thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the savannah, with predators like lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles lurking nearby. If you’re lucky, you may witness the thrilling and dramatic Mara River crossings where the herds must brave swift waters and hungry predators to reach the other side. Return to your lodge for a restful evening and dinner.
Day 2: Full-Day Migration Safari – River Crossings and Predator Action
Get ready for a full day of wildlife excitement! After an early breakfast, head out for a full-day game drive dedicated to tracking the migrating herds. During the Great Migration season (typically from July to October), the Mara River is the focal point of dramatic action. Watch as the vast herds of wildebeest and zebras attempt to cross the river, often facing peril from crocodiles and other predators. This is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events, and your guide will help you position yourself for the best possible viewing.
Beyond the river crossings, the game drive will also offer plenty of opportunities to spot the Big Cats lions, leopards, and cheetahs who follow the herds closely, taking advantage of the plentiful food supply. You’ll also encounter elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and a wide variety of antelope. The rich birdlife in the Mara is an added bonus, so don’t forget your binoculars! Enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve, surrounded by nature, before continuing the game drive in the afternoon. Return to your lodge for dinner and a restful night.
Day 3: Final Game Drive and Return to Nairobi
On your last day in the Mara, rise early for one final morning game drive. This is your last chance to see the migration at sunrise when the animals are most active. Depending on the timing of your visit, you may be able to witness another river crossing or spot the migration’s more elusive predators as they stalk the herds.
After the game drive, return to your lodge for breakfast, check out, and begin your journey back to Nairobi. You’ll arrive by late afternoon, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport for your onward travel.
